Hello. I'm traveling to Paris with my extended family this summer and am trying to book an apartment. It will be myself and wife (30s), our 10 year old daugther and my wife's parents (both in their 60s and in good shape).

One of the apartments we are trying to decide on is near the Picasso museum in Marais. The other is across from Palais Royal in arrondissement 1. I personally prefer the look o f the apartment in aarrondissement 1 a bit more but understand a lot of people prefer Marais. How is the area near Palais Royal? Is it a good area to stroll around and convenient to get coffee? Would one be more convenient to get to the Metro than the other? Which location would you stay at if it was your first time in Paris and why?

Any input appreciated!

Marais. More of an authentic Paris feel with all the cafes and boutiques.

I don't think you'll go wrong with either apartment. I have lived in Paris and for living I'd prefer the Marais. It's a little less touristy. In terms of cafes and metro access almost any arrondissment is fine, especially the low digit ones as you can find metro stops and coffe places everywhere.

As a tourist (I assume you'll be there to do some sighseeing) I'd just go with the apartment I like most as tourists tend to be walking around a lot and you can always get to any arrondissment that way. By the way, don't forget looking in on Montmartre - even with all the visitors it gets it's still gorgeous.

I think the Marais is nicer but remember this is also the day area of Paris, so some might like more than others... the 1rst is much closer to the louvre and many other attractions

I'm kinda chuckling about the person who said the Marais is a "little less touristy". I know Paris well - was just there for two months - and the Marais is completely swarmed by tourists - to the point that I avoid going there any longer unless I absolutely have to. Of course, that's true of your other choice too.
But - having said that - if it's your first time, then the Marais is the spot. It's "post card" Paris for the first timer.
