For an American I wouldn't know, but for a Canadian it's pretty cool! :wavey:

Typically, it's great fun. But not without its complications. If you want to work, for instance, you're essentially an illegal immigrant (unless you happen to have papers somehow). And there's a whole community of expats who don't really like the French and don't really interact with them.

Plus, Paris is a big city with all the attendant problems of any big city. One of the classic pleasures of expat's is complaining about strikes, early metros closings, etc.

One thing a lot of Americans learn to appreciate is the solidity of friendship in France. Parisians can be slow to open up, but if you do make French friends, they're probably there for Life.

paris is great for any expat :) we host expatriate events on a monthly basis, about 15% of our 1800 community is American :) see our get-togethers on

we have around 15% american membership (6000 expats in paris) most seem happy once settled in, maybe a little shock with the parisian culture at first but then again, most peoplea are ;)
