I have subleted through craigslist without any problems. Sometimes they ask for a deposit to be paid through paypal. Just exchange emails with the letter and get a feel for it. You have to rely on some faith -- but I have subleted 2 times through craigslist and have never had a problem.

No one has any advice? My wife and I are in a very similar situation.
