THE KEY TO HEALTH IN AYURVEDA IS - OJAS Or VITALITY
Low Ojas or Vitality is hence a low immune system, by which we become susceptible to diseases. Keeping our Agni or Fire awakened also helps, as Agni is the heat in the body and also the bile or digestive fire (Jatharagni) that burns up undigested food masses and helps eliminate it.
What Is Ojas ?
In Ayurveda, the vital essence of the body is called ‘Ojas’, described a subtle force that incessantly works to keep the body, mind and senses continuously refreshed.
There are seven Dhatus in the body and these are mainly concerned with the structural architecture of the body. The word Dhatu means – Support, Hold or to Nourish. Seven types of Dhatus in the body are as follows –
Ras-Dhatu – The main function is to nourish each and every cell of the body.
Rakta-Dhatu (Blood) – To nourish the rest of the Dhatus.
Mamsa – (Including muscles) – It provides physical strength.
Meda (Adipose – tissue) – It supports Asthi Dhatu.
Asthi – (Bone – Tissues) – It’s function is to support the body. It nourishes Majja – Dhatu.
Majja (Bone-Marrow) – its main function is to lubricate the body and to fill up the Asthi.
Sukra – (Semen) in the male or (Ovum) in the female have the main function of reproduction.
These seven Dhatus together are responsible for vitality (Ojas). ‘Ojas’ is the essence of all tissues.
Two types of ojas are described: one called ‘para ojas,’ which is located in the heart and represents the divine ‘breath’ that separates the animate from the inanimate; and ‘apara ojas,’ which is found in a state of continual flux, derived from the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breath.
Vitality is an important concept of Indian-Ayurveda. ‘Ojas’ is variously translated as vitality, body’s strength and vigor, energy force and power. ‘Ojas’ imparts strength and vigor to the body and helps to make all the functions in the body go on smoothly. The term ‘Ojas’ has been used in the Indian system of Ayurvedic medicine as a substance that prevents decay and degeneration of the body
Ojas can be judged by the following aspects:
1. Enthusiasm in work
2. Healthy heart
3. Healthy mental state.
The function of ‘Ojas’ is to endow the physical system with warmth and help in all activities. In Ayurveda it is Ojas that has been considered to play a vital role in the defense mechanism of the body. Efficient functioning of all sense organs and physical strength depend on ‘Ojas’.
Strain, physical injury, diseases, emotional stress, anxiety, fears, fatigue weakens the ‘Ojas’ in the body. All these things disturb the equilibrium of Doshas which affects the strength of Sapta Dhatu and thus bring about the disease.
To overcome health conditions and to protect the body from ailments, herbs having Rasayana properties are very useful. Rasayana herbs help to maintain vitality or health, prevents premature aging. Rasayan herbs also aim to restore normal balance of the three Doshas and strengthens the saptadhatus, recovering the vitality, invigorating the sense organs, and help avoid the formation of Aam-Tatva (Toxic – Dravya). They help to relieve anxiety, fear, depression and aversion to work. Rejuvenation theory utilizes several herbs, metals, alloys etc. Rasayana herbs strengthen Saptadhatus, maintain equilibrium of Dosha, tone up the function of all systems (Reproductive, Digestive etc.), strengthen Ojas and increase immunity.
Rasayana therapy of Ayurveda is a very comprehensive discipline .
The difference between Rasayana & Vajikaran is that – Rasayan Dravyas (Herbs). Strengthen all the Dhatus while the Vajikaran dravyas (herbs) specifically increase semen and sexual potency.
Products that include such types of herbs which are proven as Rasayan as well as for their aphrodisiac properties like, Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Awla, Mucuna pruriens, Bombax, Vidhara and Shuddha – Shilajit (a mineral) generally have very good aphrodisiac properties. These products help to increase sexual desire and performance and because of their Rasayan properties these herbs boosts immunity and invigorate reproductive organs naturally.
Taking Herbal Supplements daily is a great way to keep our Ojas or Vitality high and our Agni or digetsive fires high, thus helping prevent the on-set of diseases.
